It's been a long time coming but it's finally here. When we opened our doors in 1998 to provide funding for non-routine veterinary care, that was only part of a dream. Now in 2010, 12 years later, we are realizing another part of that dream -- nationwide financial aid for spay and neuter.
We greatly appreciate all the help our supporters have given us over the years and we are hopeful you will also support our new program by making a donation.
Like our financial aid for non-routine veterinary care, our spay/neuter program will be 100% internet based.
We will also continue our financial aid for non-routine veterinary care.
In 1998 we wanted to some day have a spay/neuter program to do our part in helping to control pet overpopulation. That was before our hearts were broken so many times when a pet came to us with a life threatening condition that could absolutely have been prevented if they had been spayed or neutered. We have since learned that the problem goes far beyond the pet overpopulation.
Between 1999 and 2009, 3.89% of all our emergency cases were for an illness that could absolutely have been prevented if the female pet had been spayed - pyometra.
There have been many, many cases in which the condition was probably due to not being spayed or neutered. However since we cannot be absolutely certain, we can't say.
Obviously we are still concerned about pet overpopulation. Companion animals shouldn't come into this world unwanted and unloved -- soon to be euthanized because there are not enough homes and shelters and rescues are overflowing.
We are especially concerned about those animals who suffer and even die from something that was so easily preventable with a spay or neuter. We've seen too many of them.
We have taken on quite a challenge as there is only one other nationwide program for spay/neuter assistance. Friends of Animals has been in business for decades and has successfully helped countless companion animals to get spayed and neutered - among other services.
It is our hope and our dream to make our spay/neuter program just as successful as our financial aid for non-routine care.
