Greta, our first-born-daughter-with-fur (on right in photo), is a cancer
survivor. In April of this year, we found two softball-sized tumors lodged in
her lungs. We opted for surgery, but weren't even sure she would make it off
the table. Greta not only made it through the procedure, but two hours after she
had been opened up from stem to stern, woke up and bolted for the hospital exit
door and nearly escaped. She couldn't stand to be separated from her "pack" for
even a minute longer. On top of the surgical recovery, Greta has soldiered
through five months of chemotherapy. Amazingly, she has fully recovered and is
back to her playful, loving self.
So far, 2008 has been the year when our family nearly lost everything; the
Hollywood strike took our living; our three year old human son had an accident
that required major surgery; and I lost my father to cancer. We had no pet
health insurance, so we had to beg borrow and steal to pay for Greta's medical
care ($15,000+). But she is everything to us. Greta is a member of our family.
A bed-hogging, food-stealing, stuffed toy-suckling force of nature who can not
be replaced.
The greatest day for our family this year was August 3rd. On that day, Greta
turned 11 years old; something we did not think would be possible a few months
before.
