Dogs Deserve Better

I am writing today to nominate Memphis as the rescued pet of the year.
About 4 years ago, on Thanksgiving Eve, I had gone to the Hobbs, New Mexico
Animal Shelter to give turkey treats to all the dogs and cats. What I didn't
know was that my heart (and life) was about to experience one of it's greatest
blessings.
In a cage in the cat room was this little yapping puppy. I couldn't help but
investigate. He was about 5 weeks old, ears cut and barely scabbed over from an
illegal home dock job, and friendly. I couldn't bare to think of all this pup
had suffered so I adopted him, planning on finding him a forever home through
pit bull rescue.
I kept him for a couple of months, had him neutered, and crate trained and
placed him for adoption through PBRC.net. A couple people wanted him but I kept
finding things wrong with them. I finally understood this was a foster failure
in the making!
Fast forward to today and I am so glad that I failed! He is an AKC Canine Good
Citizen, a natural therapy dog, and a breed ambassador for the misunderstood pit
bull breeds. I am a 4th grade teacher and I have taken him to school with me to
let my students read to him to help with their oral fluency and self-confidence.
When he goes to school, he can't make an enemy. Kids, staff, and parents think
he is the next best thing to sliced bread. I am always amazed at how he seems to
befriend those children with their own imperfections and finds it in his heart
to love them and give them confidence where people have fallen short.
He is a picture of what forgiving others looks like and an inspiration to me to
get my Master's Degree in guidance counseling. My plans are to take him to
school with me so that those children who suffer mentally, physically, and
emotionally will always have a friend who they can trust to love them just as
they are.
He is the best dog I have ever had the pleasure of sharing my life with and a
dog that some children have ever had the pleasure of sharing a book with.
Always adopt. Never buy!
