Lorelei was an unexpected bolt of light in my life. A 3-month-old pastel calico,
she was FeLV positive. She was going to go live at a nearby sanctuary where I'd
formerly lived/worked, but somehow, she never quite left my household. My other
cats are all either vaccinated, or had been (inadvertently!) exposed to FeLV
years before, so they weren't in any danger from this little spitfire who was
too little to climb the cat-tree on her own.
As with many FeLVs, there was about Lorelei a sense of, "I might not be here
long, so I have to get into everything, and create as much mischief as I can, to
fulfill my role as Cat." There were times when she just didn't seem manic enough
to be a kitten, yet when she was up and moving, she was REALLY moving. She would
squeal and scramble when you'd pick her up, as if to say, "put me DOWN! I have
things to do, and places to 'splore!" Yet she'd snuggle and purr and help out
with filing and typing and clearing off the desk without any hesitation.
She was full of life, and light, and love. She left this earth eighteen months
after she arrived; this cycle's job was done. Pure sweetness, pure brattiness,
pure joy. No, she was not here as long as I would have liked her to been--but
they never are, are they?--but I wouldn't trade one minute of the time we spent
together. And despite the sadness, there will always be room for the next little
one that others say is unadoptable...
