Taffy is a rescued
American Cocker Spaniel. She was in a shelter in Lloydminster, Alberta and in
danger of being put down. A friend, here in Fort McMurray, who owns Cocker
Spaniels was contacted and her contacts in the U.S. helped to pay her adoption
fees, vet bills, etc. so that she could get her out of the shelter. (Life's
Little Paws and Cockers In Need). We met her about 2 months later and decided
to adopt her. We have had a lot of vet bills because of her eye issues and for
dental work and have recently had her eyes removed after seeing a specialist.
Taffy was most likely in a puppy mill before being found by truck drivers,
running alongside a highway. She is only about 7 or 8 years old. It is so
amazing that she survived. She was filthy dirty and terrified when they finally
caught her. She was evidently in a lot of pain, according to the vet, and
totally blind already so we now have a very happy little dog with so much energy
it is amazing. Fortunately her expenses have not been an issue for us and I had
been able to accumulate most of the funds needed for her surgery by collecting
cans and bottles on our daily walks. Found money, that would have otherwise gone
by the wayside and we're cleaning up the environment at the same time.
I cannot imagine not owning a blind dog. Her zest for life and ability to adapt
are an inspiration. She greets each day so enthusiastically. She is truly
loving and it is so sad to think that she may have been mistreated. We are very
happy to have been given this chance to know and own her and give her a chance
for a better life. She accepted us and our home just as if she had been waiting
all her life to find us. Each day that we care for her is a gift.....Karen,
(Rick) and Taffy Welk
